1. Del inglés to box (‘boxear’), se emplea en muchos países de América para designar el deporte de lucha entre dos púgiles: «Tal y como ocurre en las peleas de box al sonar la campana, los contendientes se separaron al instante» (Velasco Regina [Méx. 1987]). Aunque se documenta ya en la primera mitad del siglo xx, se recomienda usar con preferencia la forma boxeo, mayoritaria en América y única conocida en España.
2. Del inglés box (‘caja’), se emplea en español con diversos sentidos:
a) En una cuadra o hipódromo, ‘compartimento para un solo caballo’: «Este caballo ha aparecido muerto esta semana en su box» (País [Esp.] 10.10.80).
b) En un circuito de carreras, ‘zona destinada a la asistencia técnica de los vehículos en carrera’: «El Simca [...] terminó guardado en el box debido a que le explotó el motor» (Tiempo [Col.] 15.9.96).
c) En un hospital, ‘compartimento reservado a los enfermos ingresados en urgencias o que necesitan estar aislados’: «Consta de once boxes de exploración independientes para pacientes que precisen estar encamados por su situación clínica o funcional» (Emergencias [Esp.] 6.00).
d) En diversos establecimientos, ‘compartimento para ofrecer atención individualizada’: «Contamos con boxes de atención particularizada» (Clarín [Arg.] 3.7.87). Con este sentido es preferible emplear voces españolas como compartimento, cabina, apartado, reservado, etc.
e) En el béisbol, ‘montículo donde se sitúa el lanzador para realizar los lanzamientos’: «Alex Fernández, desde el box, y Charlie Johnson, bate en mano, guiaron a los Marlins a una victoria 2-1 sobre los Expos de Montreal» (DAméricas [EE. UU.] 21.6.97).
f) Es supefluo y rechazable su empleo en lugar de las expresiones españolas apartado (o casilla) postal o de correos.
3. El plural es boxes ( plural, 1f).
