Forma tradicional adaptada a la ortografía española del nombre con el que desde 1932 hasta 1990 se conocía la ciudad de Nizni Nóvgorod, por ser la ciudad natal del escritor Máximo Gorki: «Fue justamente su crítica a la invasión soviética a ese país lo que lo llevó al confinamiento en Gorki» (Hoy [Chile] 5-11.1.87). No debe usarse en español la grafía inglesa Gorky.
