1. Voz tomada del inglés tender, usada en español desde el siglo xix con el sentido de ‘depósito incorporado a la locomotora, o enganchado a ella, que lleva el combustible y el agua necesarios para alimentarla durante el viaje’. En español debe escribirse con tilde por ser palabra llana terminada en consonante distinta de -n o -s ( tilde2, 1.1.2): «En la estación de Paraguarí cargaron una locomotora y su ténder [...] con bombas de alto poder» (RBastos Hijo [Par. 1960]). Su plural debe ser ténderes ( plural, 1g).
2. Esta voz se usa a veces en la Argentina con el sentido de ‘tendedero portátil o extensible’. En este caso es siempre preferible usar el equivalente español tendedero.

1. Como transitivo, ‘extender’, ‘tumbar(se)’ y ‘preparar [una trampa o engaño]’; como intransitivo, ‘propender’. Verbo irregular: se conjuga como entender ( apéndice 1, n.º 31).
2. Con el último sentido indicado, se construye con a, si el complemento es una oración: «Toda clase dominante tiende a perpetuar su poder» (VqzMontalbán Soledad [Esp. 1977]); y con a o hacia, si el complemento es un sustantivo: «El fascismo tiende a la arbitrariedad» (Vega Estado [Chile 1991]); «Si todo tiende hacia un fin, todo ha de tender necesariamente al mejor fin» (GmzPérez Abc [Esp. 1994]).
3. Para el adjetivo derivado (‘que tiende a algún fin’) son igualmente válidas las formas tendente y tendiente. La primera, más cercana en su forma al participio de presente latino tendens, -entis, es la preferida en España, mientras que la segunda es la mayoritaria en el español americano: «Ojalá yo hubiera sido como él, tendente a la autoexculpación, feliz con las cosas sencillas» (GmnzBartlett Serpientes [Esp. 2002]); «Los esfuerzos del cartero tendientes a conseguir que Neruda danzara una vez más [...] fracasaron» (Skármeta Cartero [Chile 1986]).
