‘Salsa de tomate condimentada con vinagre y especias’. Es voz de origen chino, que el español ha tomado del inglés, lengua en la que se escribe de tres formas: ketchup —la más cercana a la etimología y única usada en el inglés británico—, catchup y catsup —más comunes en el inglés americano—. En español se documentan las tres formas, que deben escribirse con tilde por ser palabras llanas acabadas en consonante distinta de -n o -s ( tilde2, 1.1.2): kétchup, cátchup y cátsup. La más usada es kétchup.
