Nombre de una de las cuatro provincias históricas en que se dividía la isla de Irlanda. Aunque frecuente en el lenguaje periodístico, es impropio y desaconsejable usar esta denominación para referirse a Irlanda del Norte, parte integrante del Reino Unido (→ Reino Unido), pues solo forman parte de este territorio británico seis de los nueve condados del Úlster; los otros tres pertenecen a la República de Irlanda. A pesar de estar asentado su uso sin acento gráfico, al no plantear problemas de adecuación gráfica al español, debe escribirse Úlster, con tilde, por tratarse de una palabra llana acabada en consonante distinta de -n o -s (→ tilde2, 1.1.2).
